When you think of style, a dog may not be the first thing to pop into your head, but when that dog belongs to President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, it’s a whole other story.

With the Obama family – and Michelle in particular – setting trends for their fellow Americans, we can probably expect that the next stylish, trendy dog to gain popularity will be the Portuguese Water Dog, just like new Presidential Puppy “Bo”.

Little Bo is six months old, and as a working dog will need some solid training and dog-friendly jobs to keep him out of trouble.

“This breed possesses a lot of energy, so without training or a job to do, the dog may entertain itself by running full-speed down the West Wing or barking at Republicans,” said animal behaviorist Mary Burch of the American Kennel Club.

With so many eyes watching the Obama family – and lately there’s been a great deal of speculation about the type of dog they would adopt – I wouldn’t be surprised if phones are currently ringing off the hook with people looking for their own Portuguese Water dogs.

As the owner of another high-energy, job-needing breed of dog – a Beagle – I wish the Obamas luck and hope they don’t lose too many shoes and table legs before Bo is fully trained!
