A lawsuit over the use of the name ‘Vera’ has been settled between urban designer Vera Wang, and a company reviving bright, floral scarves by Vera Neumann - whose fans included top celebrities like Marilyn Monroe.

The trademark showdown was set for a federal jury trial in New York next week, but the case has been settled, according to Susan Seid, who is relaunching Neumann’s designs as “The Vera Company.”

Neumann was known professionally as “Vera” since starting her business in the 1940s. By 1977, her designs were in 1,700 stores by 1977 and sales hit $100 million.  Neumann died in 1993 at the age of 84.

Attorneys for Wang had sued The Vera Company last Janaury. They wanted to protect certain trademarks which were pending at the time for Wang’s new line of clothing at Kohl’s department stores, called “Simply Vera Vera Wang,” but commonly referred to as “Simply Vera.”

“I’m just very pleased to be able to focus all my attention on my business again and to move forward,” said Seid, whose business is based in Atlanta.
