Coach Sues Target For Copyright Infringement
Luxury handbag designer Coach is suing cheapie retailer Target Corp. over bags that Coach says are too similar to its own.
According to a filing in U.S. District Court in Manhattan last week, Coach wants Target to quit selling the bags and pay damages and attorney fees. In the suit, Coach alleges that Target sells bags that too closely resemble its Ergo and Signature Patchwork bags, both introduced in 2008. Target began selling its bags this summer.
“It always has been – and continues to be – Target’s policy to respect the intellectual property rights of others,” a Target spokeswoman said in a statement this week.
This isn’t the first legal tango between Coach and Target. In 2006, the handbag designer accusd the retailer of selling counterfeit purses. The suit was dropped a month later.
