Michelle Obama wears white Jason Wu gown to Inaugural balls

Forget being divided over Barack Obama’s political views – people are two busy debating whether they love or hate the long, white, one-shouldered Jason Wu gown that Michelle Obama wore to all the Inaugural balls last night.

Jason Wu is a 26-year-old designer from Taipei and had already enjoyed some success but now that the most-watched woman in the world wore one of his gowns on one of the most important days of the year for Americans, he can probably expect to rocket to stardom himself and his line to start flying off the shelves.

Wu apparently had no idea his dress would be worn for the occasion. He had been approached to design something that “sparkled” and he created something he thought would work for Michelle. He didn’t hear back as to whether or not she had liked it. He told Us magazine:
“I found out when the whole world found out. I said, ‘It looks white. It looks like mine…’ I had a box of pizza and it nearly fell over. I was sitting there with my friends, and they were screaming.”
Personally, I liked the dress. People say it’s too safe, but she’s the First Lady, and Inauguration day is not the time to wear something risky and overtly sexy. I think this dress is beautiful and stunning in its simplicity and it makes for a very classy look. The only thing I would change is I would put her hair up in a soft twist for added elegance.

What do you think of Michelle Obama’s style choice for the big day?

I think Michelle Obama chose a dress that best suited her and the occasion. She was absolutely gorgeous. I hope she sticks to being Michelle and not what the world thinks she ought to stick to being.

The dress, like her inaugural suit was too bulky! The over the shoulder band was far too wide and not well placed! It was almost masculine looking – like a tartan sash worn by a bagpipe playing Scot.
Not classy.
