While the world is intently watching Michelle Obama’s every fashion move, designer Oscar de la Renta is happy to slam her for her choices.

Ms. Obama has been seen in clothing designed by Moschino, Azzedine Alaïa, and Etro. This makes de la Renta a little, shall we say, incensed. He was quoted as saying:

“American fashion right now is struggling. I think I understand what [Obama and her advisers] are doing, but I don’t think that is the right message at this particular point … I don’t object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it’s wrong to go in one direction only.”

Of course, he’s also the one who criticized the First Lady for her chosen outfit when she met the Queen of England last week, saying that one does NOT wear a sweater to Buckingham Palace. Considering the Queen broke her usual etiquette rules and essentially hugged Michelle Obama when she normally doesn’t touch anyone, I’d assume it’s safe to say that Michelle’s sweater was JUST FINE.

I think perhaps Oscar de la Renta is just pissed off that she isn’t wearing any of HIS clothes.
