Questionable trend – clumpy mascara

I’ve noticed a strange trend lately and I’m hoping it’s one that will disappear quickly – I refer to it as the “clumpy mascara” or “spiky mascara” look. And it ain’t pretty.
When I was younger and first learning to put makeup on, I didn’t really know what to do with mascara, so I ended up with clumpy lashes quite often (maybe I was an early trendsetter and didn’t even realize it!). It wasn’t until later that I learned that you can buy lash combs or that there are tricks, such as gently shaking your head back and forth while you apply the mascara so that you can avoid that and get an even coating.
But somehow it seems that several young celebrities are now sporting eyelashes that make them look like they just bought their first tube of cheap mascara yesterday. Take Hayden Panettiere at the Teen Choice Awards up top there. Hayden is such a beautiful girl and her makeup looks stunning – except for the clumpy, spiky eyelashes. Why would a professional makeup artist do that to her?
And it’s not just Hayden. Look at Emma Roberts:

Emma hit the red carpet for the Teen Choice Awards with the same awkward mascara. She has some killer cat’s eye going on but I’m too distracted by the gloppy lashes to appreciate it.
I can’t think of any older celebrities that I’ve seen with this problem. Maybe I’m turning into the grumpy “get off my lawn” person and can’t identify with the trends of youth, but seriously girls, clumpy mascara is not now and never will be hot.
Please, for the love of all that is holy, you’re rich celebs – go buy yourselves a damn lash comb and learn how to use it!
